The Role of Physical Therapy in Pain Management
Physical therapy is increasingly recognized as a frontline treatment for pain, not a supplement to medication but an evidence-based alternative that can reduce …
Applying to US DPT programs as an international student involves everything domestic applicants face plus several additional layers: credential evaluation, English proficiency testing, visa documentation, and financial proof. Some programs do not accept international students at all. Here is what you need to know to navigate the process.
This is the first thing to verify. Some DPT programs restrict admission to US citizens and permanent residents only. ECU requires applicants to be US citizens or permanent residents and explicitly states that international applicants will not be reviewed. Tufts (Boston) does not accept applicants without a US permanent resident visa.
Before investing time and money in credential evaluations and language testing, confirm with each program on your list that they accept international applicants. Check the program's admissions page or contact the admissions office directly.
International students apply through PTCAS just like domestic applicants. The application includes personal information, academic history, observation hours, personal essay, and references. See our PTCAS application guide for the complete walkthrough.
Key difference for international applicants: You must list all international institutions in PTCAS but do not enter foreign courses directly. Instead, your coursework is submitted through a credential evaluation service (see below). Foreign coursework is excluded from PTCAS GPA calculations.
If you completed any coursework at an institution outside the US or English-speaking Canada, you must have your transcripts evaluated by an approved credential evaluation agency. The evaluation must be a course-by-course report with GPA conversion, sent directly to PTCAS from the evaluation agency.
WES (World Education Services) is the most commonly required agency. Some programs also accept evaluations from:
Important: Some programs require a specific agency. UIC requires a verbatim literal translation, not an evaluation of equivalencies. Always check each program's specific requirements.
Credential evaluation takes 4 to 8 weeks depending on the agency, document complexity, and time of year. Start this process well before PTCAS opens.
Most programs require international applicants whose first language is not English to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores. Some also accept DuoLingo. Score requirements vary significantly:
| Program | TOEFL iBT | IELTS | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tufts | 100+ (or 5.0 new scale) | 7.0 | High bar |
| Boston University | 100 | Not specified | Strong expectation |
| UT Southwestern | 100+ competitive | Accepted | No stated minimum |
| Arcadia | 80 (21 writing) | 6.5 | Sub-score minimums |
| University of Pittsburgh | 80 | 6.5 | DuoLingo 120 accepted |
| Central Michigan | 79 regular, 61 conditional | 6.5 / 5.5 conditional | Conditional admission option |
| Simmons | 88 | Not specified |
Waivers are typically available if you completed a bachelor's degree (or 2+ years of study) at an institution where English is the primary language of instruction, including institutions in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, or New Zealand.
TOEFL on the new scoring scale: Starting January 2026, ETS transitioned to a new TOEFL iBT scoring scale. Check each program's website for whether they list scores on the old or new scale.
International applicants must meet the same observation hour requirements as domestic applicants. Hours completed outside the US can count at some programs, but most expect the majority of your hours to be with a US-licensed physical therapist. If you are currently outside the US, consider:
See our observation hours guide for complete documentation requirements.
After acceptance, you will need an F-1 student visa to study in the US. Your program will issue a Form I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility) once you provide proof of financial support.
Financial documentation typically required:
At Simmons, all non-US citizens requiring a student visa must provide evidence of ability to pay, including costs beyond tuition (housing, food, insurance, books). At Central Michigan, accepted international students must submit an I-20 Affidavit and evidence of financial support.
F-1 visa holders must:
International students are not eligible for US federal financial aid (FAFSA, federal loans, Pell Grants). Funding options include:
Plan your finances carefully. DPT programs cost $65,000 to $200,000+ over three years, plus living expenses.
Some hybrid DPT programs (with online coursework and periodic campus immersions) may have visa complications. University of Pittsburgh notes that DPT Hybrid international students may be required to relocate to the Pittsburgh area for the didactic portion due to visa restrictions. F-1 visa requirements mandate full-time, in-person enrollment, which limits the feasibility of fully online or distributed formats.
Graduating from a CAPTE-accredited DPT program makes you eligible to take the NPTE and apply for licensure in any US state. However, if you plan to practice outside the US after graduation, verify that the US DPT degree meets the licensure requirements of your home country or target country. Some countries have their own licensing exams and may not directly recognize US credentials.
| When | What |
|---|---|
| 12+ months before applying | Begin credential evaluation (WES), take TOEFL/IELTS |
| 8-10 months before | Verify program eligibility for international students |
| 6 months before | Complete observation hours, finalize program list |
| When PTCAS opens (June) | Submit application, ensure WES report sent to PTCAS |
| After acceptance | Submit financial documentation, receive I-20, apply for F-1 visa |
| 3-4 months before start | Schedule visa interview, arrange housing, plan travel |
Start the credential evaluation and language testing process at least 12 months before you plan to apply. These steps take longer than most applicants expect, and delays can push your application past program deadlines.
